Southern Taiwan popular local food places(Tainan & Kaohsiung)

Taiwan’s food and drink philosophy is eat often and eat well. From gua bao to bubble tea, here are 15 MUST TRY FOOD in Taiwan.

Today i wanna share a few places ( really only a few) that very popular for local taiwanese in Tainan and Kaohsiung.


1.Tainan Tu Hsiao Yueh Danzai noodles (link in title to see official website)

They are famous for their Dan Zai Noodles, a small bowl of traditional fares added with minced meat, dried shrimp and black vinegar.

$ About 2 US dollars


2.Tainan Fucheng Savory rice pudding (Wa gui)

Wa gui is the local term for savory rice pudding, served and made in a bowl mixed with duck egg yolk, shiitake, pork, and shrimp. The pudding is made with rice milk and flavored with soy sauce and sesame oil so that it comes out a faint flush of brown.

$ Each bowl sells for about one U.S. dollar.


3. shrimp rolls and oyster soup (can find everywhere)

50-year old store uses only fresh shrimps and quality minced pork, mixed with fish paste as fillings, and then wrapped with pig belly membrane, dipped in flour, and deep-fried.


4. Chen Jiake oyster rolls

Oyster Rolls sported crisp crusts of peppery, tempura batter. They contained small, plump local oysters and delicate milled milkfish, which we dipped in viscous soy sauce and smooth, slightly spicy chile sauce.

5.  Milkfish congee (there are lots of local shops)

Fried shallots, fried garlic, finely chopped coriander and scallions are never missing in the Taiwan milkfish porridge

6. Tai cheng fruit shop

My favourite ice cream shop in taiwan!


7. Wan San seafood

Very local place, will be hard for foreigners to go there if don’t speak mandarin, sort of like buffel, menu in mandarin only.

But i hardly recommend this place!

Can’t make sure these local places all have english menu or english speaker, but worth to try it out!
